Again, this is probably, overall, a good thing to be exposed to. However, the author conveys quite strongly and explicitly that the BEST way to live is with extended family (aunts, uncles, grandparents) underfoot, which is not necessarily the American way. Description: Anna HibiscusAnna Hibiscus lives in amazing Africa with her mother. I loved that my children were exposed to a different way of living, from going to the store by foot, growing orange trees in your back yard, having a name that is a word (a little girl whose real name is "Chocolate", without being a joke or a play on words), and living in close quarters with family. Titles in this Set: Anna Hibiscus Love from Anna Hibiscus Welcome Home. But she lives a different life and holds different values than my family. Get to know her, her family and what makes them happy in this delightful and beautifully illustrated story that explores feelings, love and togetherness in. Parent 2: I had very mixed feelings about this book. I also love how Atinuke artfully contrasted/compared life in Africa with other parts of the world, and also explained how modern life and traditional ways can co-exist. Although set in Africa, it has universal appeal and will resonate with young readers. It is a celebration of family and growing up. Prizes and samples provided by Random House Children’s Books But The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is only “just a spy novel” in the sense that Moby Dick and “The Secret Sharer” are “just sea tales” or “The Turn of the Screw” and “Afterward” are “just ghost stories." Sure, they fulfill the requirements of their genres. I certainly was stupid all these years, for I did not read this book-at least in part-because I considered it “just a spy novel” (albeit a superb one), and the “spy novel"-at least since Ian Fleming ruined it-is not one of my favorite genres. I am of two minds now that I have finished The Spy Who Came in From the Cold for the first time: I am irritated at myself for having postponed the pleasure of reading this magnificent book for so many years, and yet I am exhilarated and excited too, marked by this unqualified encounter with greatness. In a sense, this has also been this country’s experience of slavery, something that took place long ago and far away. One answer is that, as Fergusson never set foot in the West Indies, let alone on his plantations, the appalling reality of slavery was something that could remain safely abstract, consigned to some distant universe in which human suffering didn’t register. This is the question, in one form or another, which recurs throughout this compelling narrative. In assessing this blandly sinister primary source, Renton asks how someone who took an intellectual interest in progressive debates could also methodically approve of collars, handcuffs and chains used to bind and torment innocent human beings. And he ran the family’s slave plantations in Tobago and Jamaica for almost 50 years.įergusson was also a meticulous keeper of accounts, which survive largely intact. He was thought of as a well-educated and highly cultured man. Sir Adam Fergusson was an 18th-century lawyer, MP and someone who knew many of the key figures in the Scottish enlightenment. The Fergussons of Kilkerran, of whom Renton is a direct descendant, were powerful members of the landed gentry.
